Swansea Materials Research and Testing (SMaRT)
Swansea Materials Research and TestingSwansea
UKAS schedule 7772 identifies SMaRT in the ISM Building at Swansea University Bay Campus. It restricts metals/alloys testing to that address and lists tensile, creep, stress rupture, separately controlled fatigue and fatigue-crack-growth methods. Each test has its own force and temperature conditions.

Testing capabilities
Tensile, creep and stress rupture
Metals tensile tests are listed at ambient and elevated temperature. The scope separately covers creep and stress rupture from ambient to 1150°C, with constant-stress creep excluded.
Controlled fatigue and crack growth
Low-cycle force-controlled fatigue, high-cycle force-controlled fatigue, low-cycle strain-controlled fatigue and corner-crack growth by potential-drop measurement are distinct listed methods.
Equipment and published limits
| Specification | Published value | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Tensile conditions | Up to 100 kN; ambient or ambient to 900°C | The ambient and elevated-temperature rows use separately listed methods. These figures do not apply to every fatigue or creep method. |
| Fatigue conditions | Low-cycle force control: up to ±250 kN, ambient to 1150°C; high-cycle force and low-cycle strain control: up to ±100 kN, ambient to 900°C | The limits belong to their separate fatigue control modes. Corner-crack growth is listed from ambient to 900°C without transferring either force limit. |

- Issue 012 dated 22 September 2026 is site-only. Named references include ISO 6892 tensile methods, ISO 204/EN 2002-005 creep and stress rupture, EN 6072 force-controlled fatigue, BS 7270 strain control and ISO 12108 crack growth; exact editions and method allocations remain in the schedule.
What to confirm with the facility
- Constant-stress creep is excluded. Tensile, low/high-cycle fatigue and corner-crack methods have different control modes and limits; the most permissive figure is not a universal facility envelope.
- Confirm current availability, exact specimen/fixture, control mode, method edition, accredited reporting and quotation.

Issue 012 dated 22 September 2026 is restricted to the Bay Campus address and metals/alloys methods. Tensile, creep, force-controlled/strain-controlled fatigue and crack-growth temperatures/forces remain separate; creep excludes constant stress.
